LAGOS RECORDS ANOTHER FIRST IN THE HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICE

Lagos State Government has recorded another first in its professional practice of the Human Resource Management (HRM) in Nigeria, as it has inaugurated the first ever Personnel Practitioners Consultative Association in the Public Service.

Speaking at the Inauguration Ceremony of the Alausa Personnel Practitioners’ Consultative Association (PPCA), a platform established to ensure deeper Professionalism of the HR Practice, the Head of Service, Mrs. Folashade Adesoye stated that the event was a historic one and a Milestone in the continuous growth and development of the Admin and Human Resource Cadre in the Lagos State Public Service.

 According to her this Inauguration is an indication of the commitment of State Public Service to professionalism and best practice, especially, in line with the emergence of Lagos as a Smart City.

 She added that the theme of the inauguration Ceremony which is “Sustaining Growth Mindset through HR”, is not only apt but timely, and represents efforts at strengthening and intensifying the re-orientation strategy, to prepare for the onerous task of starring Lagos State as a Mega City.

 She therefore urged all HR Practitioners in Lagos State Public Service to Understand the Concept of Change and the need to Influence the Mindset of the people around them from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset while also embracing Creativity and Innovation.

While Commending His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, the Governor of Lagos State for his approval of the HR Practice in the State’s Public Service; the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) for supporting a very high standard of HR practice as well as their Significant Contribution to its Growth and Development; the HOS Congratulated the PPCA and assured CIPM of the State’s Commitment to its objectives.

The President, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM),  Mr. Udom Uko Inoyo, represented by the Vice President, CIPM Mr Olawale Adediran while applauding HR Practitioners in the  Lagos State Public Service for attaining this feat, added that the PPCA is a vital organ of the State’s Branch, established to ensure that the Objective for which the CIPM was established is achieved across all geo-political locations.

 “We are Proud this Transition Agenda of the Lagos State Government from Personnel to Professional Human Resource Management has achieved success and is now a Model Brand”, he said.

In his Goodwill Message, the Director General, Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation Mr Toba Otusanya while reflecting on the Journey so far from the transition Stage to the Present HR Practice in Lagos State, Stated that there were series of Stakeholder’s engagement held in Lagos State before the establishment of the HR.

“We established the Implementation Working Group, through them about 158 Public Servants/Members became CIPM Certified” he said.

 He added that as a result of the good foundation laid, the State was able to Participate in the 2017 CIPM HR-Best Practice Awards, where Lagos won the Public Sector Category.

 While urging Agencies who were yet to fully implement the HR Practice to commence soon and embrace the Profession in its entirely, the DG encouraged HR Practitioners in the State to always share their talents with their Colleagues, while also utilizing the resources made available at the CIPM to further develop themselves.

The DG suggested that the Platform should also be used to debate Policy Issues; adding that OTCI is Part of the PPCA and would be willing to assist in order to accelerate development in the State.

The Guest Speaker Mr Olusegun Mojeed In his Presentation titled “Sustaining Growth Mindset through HR”, said, Mindset is at the foundation of everything and HR is about People.

According to him, the need to move away from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset cannot be over-emphasized, especially as it relates to the HR Practice in the State. He therefore urged the HR Practitioners to embrace the Outward Mindset which according to him is more Important than the Growth Mindset, as becoming more Outward would make them see the needs, objectives and challenges of others; adjust their efforts to be more helpful to others; while also ensuring that they measure and hold themselves accountable for the Impact of their Work on others.

Other Speakers at the event who also gave their Goodwill Messages include the Permanent Secretary Public Service Office, Mr. Bashir Braimoh; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Mrs Kofoworola Awobamise the DG, Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo, Mr. Senukon Ajose–Harrison; and the former Director General, Public Service Staff Development Centre, Magodo, Mrs. Regina Olubunmi Fabanwo.

The Inauguration Ceremony which ended on a good note with CIPM members reciting their Oath of Allegiance, had in attendance representatives of the bodies of Permanent Secretaries, Director Generals; Members of the CIPM National Body and State Chapter as well as HR Practitioners in the State.
